Know the Signs of a Concussion to Protect You and Your Family
November 1, 2018 (bizjournals.com) An online article from bizjournals.com discusses the signs of a concussion, which people should be familiar with to protect themselves and their families in the event of head injuries.*
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury in which blunt force applied to the head shakes the brain inside the skull. Concussions might seem rather commonplace, especially in the world of sports, but they need to be taken seriously. The brain is vulnerable after a concussion, and a repeat head injury can leave the brain damaged.
“One of the most important things an athlete can do following a concussion is immediately remove themselves from play,” said Dr. Daniel Charek, a concussion specialist with the Northside Hospital Sports Medicine Network. “Research shows that athletes who continue to play after a concussion take an average of twice as long to recover from their injury. For any person with a concussion, activities posing a risk for further head injury should be avoided until the concussion has resolved.”
Before people can take appropriate action with regard to a suspected concussion, they need to understand the signs of a one. Concussion symptoms vary from person to person and from event to event. Some of the most common signs, however, include:
- ·Headache or pressure in the head
- ·Nausea and vomiting
- ·Dizziness or difficulty maintaining balance
- ·Blurred vision
- ·Sensitivity to light or noise
- ·Confusion or disorientation
- ·Difficulty sleeping
These symptoms can appear from 24 to 48 hours after the head injury. If you or a family member is experiencing any of these symptoms after a head injury, such as from a workplace accident, car crash, or sports injury, seek medical attention immediately.
