Georgia Experts Offer Tips for a Safe Halloween

October 30, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – October 29, 2018 (seattletimes.com) Safe Kids Georgia and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are offering tips to kids and parents for a safe Halloween. The tips are posted online at seattletimes.com.*

Halloween is a special event for kids and adults, but the holiday poses hazards for everyone. Experts in Georgia recommend following the below tips to ensure you and your family have a fun and safe Halloween:

Avoid costumes with excessive, flowing fabric.  Capes and long sleeves, extremely loose clothing, or long dresses can cause people to tip and fall. These costumes can also easily become caught in things or rub against open flames.

Choose brightly colored costumes, and use reflective strips and glow sticks.  When walking and trick-or-treating in the dark, wear bright colors if possible, and use reflective strips or glow sticks. These will help drivers see you and help everyone avoid a traffic accident.

Use face paint, instead of masks.  Masks can obstruct vision and cause someone to become injured. Use face paint, instead, to preserve vision.

Walk slowly.  Walk slowly during trick-or-treating and be mindful of drivers. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets, and always walk on sidewalks, if possible, in the direction of oncoming traffic.

Inspect treats.  Parents should look over all of the treats their children have collected on Halloween before letting them eat anything. Toss anything with opened, tampered, or loose wrapping, as well as anything homemade, unless you know and trust the person who made it.

Supervise all children younger than 13.  Parents should make sure an adult is supervising all children younger than 13 who are trick-or-treating. Create a route ahead of time, and establish a curfew for your children.
