Georgia DOT Nearly Finished with Hurricane Restoration Work
TIFTON, GA. – October 15, 2018 (moultrieobserver.com) According to an online news story from moultrieobserver.com, the Georgia Department of Transportation Special Response Team is nearly finished with its mission to restore open roadways and working traffic signals in the state, following the effects of Hurricane Michael.*
The Georgia DOT released a statement saying its crews have made significant progress in the days following the storm. Hurricane Michael, which was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reached Georgia, wreaked havoc on transportation in the state, sending debris onto roadways and knocking out traffic signals.
Almost 250 routes in the state were impassable or contained large debris after the storm, and nearly 300 traffic signals were damaged or disconnected. About 1,400 personnel members with the DOT were deployed across the state to respond. To date, crews with the DOT have cleared more than 12,000 miles of roadway and have repaired all but about 25 signals.
“Work to restore Georgia to normalcy continues,” said the DOT in its press release. “Georgia DOT has 18 teams working on local city and county routes. These teams consist of approximately 540 people utilizing 413 pieces of equipment. Crews are embedded with the GFC Incident Management Team based in Tifton and will work closely with both GFC and local Emergency Management Agencies on remaining needs.”
Michael was the worst storm to ever hit the Florida Panhandle, where it made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane. In the days ahead, the Georgia DOT asks for people’s patience, as crews continue to work throughout the state. The Department also reminds people to use caution on the roads, pass through non-working signaled intersections with care, and stay away from debris in all roadways.
