Atlanta Makes List of Best Bike Cities in America

October 15, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – October 10, 2018 (bicycling.com) Bicycling Magazine recently published a list of the Best Bike Cities in America, and Atlanta, Georgia, made an appearance. An article at bicycling.com details the top 50 cities.*

The ranking system used by Bicycling Magazinegave each city a possible 100 points, divided into four categories: safety, friendliness, energy, and culture. Cities could achieve 40 total points for safety, 30 points for friendliness (how accessible the city is to riders of all ages), 20 points for energy (the city’s political climate regarding bicycling), and 10 points for culture (availability of shops, routes, and other attributes that make a city enjoyable for riding).

Based on this ranking system, Atlanta was No. 42 in the Best Bike Cities. The city received 20 points for safety, 18 for friendliness, 15 for energy, and 7 for culture. Because of the size of the Atlanta metro area, comprehensive bike planning is somewhat difficult, the magazine noted.

“There are 13 counties that surround the city, and they’re starting to do more for cycling, but they’re still pretty behind,” said Rebecca Serna, an advocate for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition.

But increased funding for local bus systems is helping Atlanta gain more bicyclists, and the city has been pushing to create better networks for riders.

“A lot of projects that have been in the queue for a while are finally funded,” Serna said. “It’s a street by street conversation. The places where car ownership is lowest are where the streets are most dangerous for walking and biking.”

Atlanta ranked above Miami, Florida (50), Knoxville, Tennessee (49), Tampa, Florida (48), Albuquerque, New Mexico (47), Columbia, Missouri (46), Omaha, Nebraska (45), Tallahassee, Florida (44), and San Jose, California (43). The No. 1 city on the list was Seattle, Washington.
