Coast Guard Urging Boaters to Use Caution During Columbus Day Weekend

October 06, 2018

GEORGIA – October 4, 2018 (ohsonline.com) According to an online new report from ohsonline.com, the Coast Guard 7th District is using boaters to use caution during Columbus Day weekend.

The Coast Guard 7th District is headquartered in Miami, Florida, and serves Georgia, South Carolina, the Florida Peninsula, and the Caribbean basin. Crews from the Coast Guard, along with law enforcement agencies, will be patrolling the waters during the holiday weekend and will be conducting safety checks. The Coast Guard is encouraging boaters to follow important safety rules to ensure they have a safe weekend.

Never Boat Intoxicated

In every state in the U.S., it is illegal to boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Penalties for doing so include fines, suspension of boating licenses, revocation of boating privileges, and jail time. Alcohol is the leading factor in fatal boating accidents, so boaters should heed this warning.

Use a Float Plan

When you got out boating, you should always leave a float plan with a friend or relative who is not joining you on the trip. Your plan should include detailed information that rescue personnel can use to locate you if you are reported missing. For examples and more information, visit floatplancentral.org.

Always Wear a Life Jacket

It is a fact that life jackets save lives. In 2017, 68 percent of fatal boating accidents involved drowning victims. Eighty-two percent of the people who drowned that year in boating accidents were not wearing life jackets. Even if you are an excellent swimmer, an accident can leave you injured, and you can quickly become exhausted treading water.
