Eggs Recalled in Atlanta Due to Salmonella Contamination Concerns

September 17, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – September 10, 2018 (patch.com) An egg producer is recalling certain eggs in the Atlanta area because of concerns about salmonella contamination, according to an online news story from patch.com.*

The recall was voluntarily initiated by Gravel Ridge Farms and affects its Cage Free Large Eggs. Illnesses have been confirmed at locations using these eggs, and the company began the recall out of an abundance of caution. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed Gravel Ridge Farms of the potential contamination issue on September 6.

Five retailers in the Atlanta area sold these eggs, including Candler Park Market, Grant Park Market, Westview Corner Market, Sevananda Natural Foods, and The Mercantile. People who bought Gravel Ridge Farms Cage Free Large Eggs from these stores are encouraged to discard them.

Earlier this year, salmonella contamination was confirmed in eggs from the Rose Acre Farms egg facility in North Carolina. Through use of epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback evidence, the FDA definitively tied the salmonella outbreak affecting 207 million eggs back to Rose Acre’s Hyde County, North Carolina, egg production facility.

Contaminated eggs reportedly went to nine different states, including Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The eggs are branded in those states under the names Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, and Sunshine Farms.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning usually appear within six to 72 hours after exposure to contaminated food. Symptoms appear flu-like in nature and include fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, headache, and vomiting. People usually recover within a few days, but children and immunocompromised people are at a higher risk of serious infection.
