Pedestrian Fatalities on the Rise in Georgia, Around the County
GEORGIA – (augustachronicle.com) Pedestrian accidents and fatalities have been increasing during the last several years, both in Georgia and around the country, according to an online news story from augustachronicle.com.
Since mid-July, three pedestrians have been killed by motor vehicles in the Augusta, Georgia, area, and recently, two pedestrians were hit by vehicles in the same day in Richmond County. In 2017, 260 pedestrians were killed by motor vehicles in Georgia, which was an increase from 2016 (235 pedestrian fatalities) and 2015 (206 pedestrian fatalities). According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, pedestrian fatalities have increased more than 50 percent since 2014. So far this year, 146 pedestrians have died in Georgia, a number that’s well outpacing last year.
The Georgia DOT says 82 percent of pedestrian accidents occur at night, and 90 percent occur outside of a crosswalk. About the same percentage of accidents is attributed to pedestrian failure to yield and driver failure to yield — 33 percent each. Many of the accidents also involve alcohol on the part of either the pedestrian or the driver.
On a national scale, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,987 pedestrian fatalities occurred in 2016, which was an increase from the two years prior (5,495 in 2015 and 4,910 in 2014).
Katie Fallon, public information office for the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, said many factors play into these accidents. Drivers need to slow down and pay attention, Fallon said, and pedestrians needed to pay attention, too. “The most important thing to remember, though, is these aren’t just numbers,” Fallon said. “These are people.”
