Elder Abuse in Georgia Not Uncommon Finds Georgia Crime Information Center

March 26, 2018

ATLANTA, GA – March 26, 2018 (cbs46.com).  According to an online news report at cbs46.com, three health care providers in DeKalb County, Georgia are facing charges after a nursing home patient dies.*

This situation is not as uncommon as you may believe.  It is believed that for every case of elder abuse that is reported, there are over twenty that never receive attention.  It is an issue that has many people concerned who have loved ones in long term care facilities.  "My biggest concern is abuse I'm concerned about possible abuse," said Bryant who currently has two family members in area nursing homes.  These concerns are not unfounded given the statistics regarding elder care abuse.  “According to the Georgia Crime Information Center, more than 777 charges were filed against nearly 560 individuals for abuse, neglect or exploitation of a vulnerable adult in 2016.” And, while the stats for 2017 aren't out yet they're expected to be similar.

Given the foregoing, there are steps you can take to prevent a loved one from facing elder abuse.  Per the Department of Human Services, Aging Services Division, you can look for signs of abuse such as bruises, lacerations, wounds, and bite marks.  You should also be on the lookout for signs of neglect such as malnutrition, clothes with urine stains on it, dehydration, and an unsafe environment.   You can also visit relatives on a frequent basis, which greatly reduces the chance of elder abuse, as well as be on guard as to your loved one’s financial habits.

“If the family doesn’t go visit their loved ones then they think they’ve been abandoned, and the nursing home workers don’t do the necessary steps that they’re supposed to do in providing care for that individual."
