New Consumer Product Safety Information Database Designed to Protect Consumers

A new website launched by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) may go a long way toward protecting consumers from dangerous and defective products. The new website called was created pursuant to a mandate by Congress as part of the Consumer Product Safety Act. The site will allow consumers to report complaints regarding injuries or potential harm and permit consumers considering purchasing a product to research products they are considering purchasing.

The new website is designed to make it easier for consumers to learn about safety risks posed by particular risks of defective products and for the CPSC to learn about adverse reports of harm or injury more quickly. When consumers provide reports of potential harm or injury from a product the CPSC will review the complaint and provide the information to the product manufacturer, which will have ten days to respond. Assuming all required information has been provided and the information appears to be truthful, both the complaint and any response by the manufacturer will be published on the site.

The CPSC began testing the site January 24 and has already received over 1,500 reports from consumers. Businesses have also responded to the site with over 1,400 businesses signing up to receive any adverse reports about their products.
