Salmonella Melon Recall Hits 18 Georgia Stores

GEORGIA – June 17, 2018 (patch.com) A food recall related to precut melons contaminated with salmonella has affected 18 stores in the state of Georgia, according to an online news report from patch.com.*

Earlier in June, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a recall of precut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and melon fruit medley packages from Indiana-based Caito Foods, LLC. The recall indicates these products, which were available at grocery stores starting on April 30, could be contaminated with salmonella. The potentially contaminated melon products were distributed by Caito to 22 states. To date, the CDC reports that 60 people in five states have been infected with salmonella, and more than half of those people were hospitalized.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in Georgia, but 18 stores in Georgia have been affected by the recall. These stores include Jekyll Market on Jekyll Island and 17 different Sprouts Farmers Market stores in the following cities:

Atlanta
Cumming
Decatur
Duluth
Dunwoody
Lawrenceville
Marietta
Peachtree City
Peachtree Corners
Roswell
Sandy Springs
Smyrna
Suwanee
Tucker
Woodstock

Consumers who have food they suspect is included in the recall should discard it and not eat it. Children and adults who might be more susceptible to infection should especially not eat melons that might be contaminated.
