Patients Harmed by Unsafe Medical Devices File Lawsuits in Georgia

June 18, 2018

ATLANTA, GA- According to, Georgia patients are involved in a variety of lawsuits stemming from unsafe medical devices. Many of the cases indicate the possibility that federal oversight might be too lax. The government might not be doing enough to filter out unsafe products and protect patients from being harmed by medical devices that are ineffective or dangerous.

One patient, Doris Jones learned that a clot filtering device that had been implanted in her had come apart, and broken fragments were traveling through her body towards her heart. One piece remains inside of her because surgeons could not safely remove it from her artery. Jones then learned that the same device was responsible for injuring or killing thousands of other patients. The lawsuit she filed against Bard is one of hundreds of thousands of lawsuits filed against the manufacturers of medical devices. The sheer number of cases indicates that something must be wrong with the approval process for medical devices.

In many cases, there are so many injured patients that the lawsuits are consolidated into multi-district lawsuits. Georgia has become the battleground for many of these cases because the state is home to many medical device companies and manufacturers.

Atlanta is home to hundreds of lawsuits that are being filed in relation to hernia mesh. Patients who were implanted with the mesh say that the device often dissolved into their flesh rather than supporting their weak or damaged tissue.

Some feel that the federal regulators have failed to adjust to the rapidly advancing medical industry. The regulations may have worked a few decades ago, but they are not designed to provide regulations for newer high-tech devices and implants. Another issue that arises in many cases is the FDA’s process of approving substantially similar products without the same level of scrutiny as new products. When it comes to complicated medical devices, a small change can make a huge difference.
