Precut Melons Recalled for Salmonella Contamination

GEORGIA – June 9, 2018 (patch.com) Precut melons from an Indiana-based company have been recalled after being linked to a salmonella outbreak, according to an article by patch.com. Some of the affected melons were distributed to Georgia retailers.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that precut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and melon fruit medley packages from Caito Foods, LLC, could be contaminated with salmonella. The recalled melon products were distributed and sold at Costco, Kroger, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods in the states of Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio.  

To date, the CDC reports that 60 people in five states have been infected with salmonella, and all of the infected persons reported eating precut melons before they became ill. More than half of the infected people were hospitalized. These people reported developing symptoms consistent with salmonella contamination after eating melons or fruit mixes bought at grocery stores between April 30 and May 28. 

Salmonella can cause serious health complications, including fatal infections in young children, elderly persons, or immunocompromised persons. Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Anyone who develops symptoms after consuming store-bought, precut melons should seek immediate medical attention. 

Consumers who have food they suspect is included in the recall should discard it and not eat it. Children and adults who might be more susceptible to infection should especially not eat melons that might be contaminated.
