Off-Duty FBI Agent Accidentally Shoots Man at Denver Bar
DENVER, CO. – June 3, 2018 (whio.com) As reported by an online story on whio.com, an off-duty FBI agent accidentally shot a man early Saturday morning, June 2, while dancing at a bar in Denver, Colorado.*
The incident took place around 12:45 a.m. June 2 at the Mile High Spirits Distillery and Tasting Bar in the Lower Downtown neighborhood of Denver. A bar patron turned over a cell phone video that captures the incident. The video footage from the bar shows the agent dancing in a circle of onlookers and doing a backflip, after which a gun slipped from his waistband holster and landed on the floor. It appears when the agent reached to picked the gun up, the firearm discharged. The flash of the gunshot can be seen in the video.
A man standing in the bar was shot in the leg and is said to have non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Denver Police said the incident constituted an unintended discharge of an off-duty agent’s weapon. The agent went to Denver Police headquarters for questioning and was released to his FBI supervisor. The agent has not yet been identified, and it is not clear whether he will face charges in connection with the incident. Authorities have not indicated whether the agent had been drinking at the time.
The FBI has thus far declined to comment on the situation, saying it is a personnel matter about which the agency cannot provide any details. The FBI has not provided information about its policies as to off-duty agents carrying weapons. The Denver District Attorney is expected to shortly come to a decision about charges.
