UPDATE: Five People Dead after Consuming Lettuce Contaminate with E.coli Bacteria

June 07, 2018

June 1, 2018 (abcnews.go.com).  According to an online news report at abcnews.go.com, five people have died from an outbreak of E.coli bacteria after consuming contaminated romaine lettuce.

According to a report from the CDC, the outbreak of E.coli has led to the death of five people and has caused nearly two hundred people to get sick spanning thirty five states.  Of the 197 that became sick, eighty nine people required hospitalization.

“Most of the people who recently became ill ate romaine lettuce when lettuce from the Yuma [Arizona] growing region was likely still available in stores, restaurants, or in peoples’ homes,” the CDC report states. “Some people who became sick did not report eating romaine lettuce, but had close contact with someone else who got sick from eating romaine lettuce.”

Following reports of the first outbreak, the CDC warned people not to consume romaine lettuce.  This warning has been terminated as the lettuce that was contaminated from Yuma, Arizona is not being harvested.

Those at risk for serious complications and even death from E.coli poisoning are young children and the elderly.

The CDC’s continues to investigate the outbreak that has led to the outbreak.
