Contaminated Lettuce Leads to Fifty Three Cases of E.coli Bacteria
According to an online news report from abcnews.go.com, lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona contaminated with E.coli bacteria is the cause of an outbreak infecting fifty three people in sixteen states, and includes 31 hospitalizations, according the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Eighteen additional cases of E.coli poisoning have been reported since April 13, 2018. Five people who consumed the lettuce are facing such issues as kidney failure, per the CDC. No deaths have currently been reported.
"Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick," the CDC said in a statement this week.
According to the report, “Fresh Foods Manufacturing is recalling there ‘Great to Go by Market District’ following an E. coli outbreak that has spread to several states and sickened dozens of people.”
The contaminated romaine lettuce has caused sickness to people in Idaho, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Washington, Virginia, Alaska, Louisiana, Arizona, California and Montana.
Per the CDC, "at this time, ill people are not reporting whole heads or hearts of romaine.” Restaurants that contained the contaminated romaine indicated that it was bagged, chopped lettuce that are affected.
An E.coli infection can cause the following symptoms:
- Diarrhea that may change to bloody stools
- Severe abdominal cramps
The CDC continues to investigate the outbreak. No further details are available at this time.
