Plans Underway for New Pedestrian Trail in Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA. – April 26, 2018 (reporternewspapers.net) Plans are underway for a new pedestrian trail underneath the Northside Drive bridge in Atlanta, according to an online report by reporternewspapers.net.*
In 2020, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to close Northside Drive just north of Atlanta Memorial Park to replace the bridge along the roadway. The bridge is aging and in need of repairs. During construction, crews will also add a separate pedestrian bridge that will allow for relocation of water and sewer pipes and provide pedestrians safer access along the bridge. This project is expected to take approximately 90 days if crews are able to work 24 hours a day.
Recently, the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy and the PATH Foundation have both started working with the Georgia Department of Transportation to add another project to the construction plans for the bridge: construction of a pedestrian trail underneath the bridge. The trail would connect to the multi-use path that already exists along the roadway and would provide needed connectivity for pedestrians.
The trail is also part of a wider effort by the Conservancy to build numerous walking and biking paths for people around the park. It would be paved with concrete and connect the east and west sides of Northside Drive as well as provide better access to a playground nearby that was constructed in 2017.
The trail would be built after the bridge has been finished. Funding for the path, including the source of the funding, has not yet been finalized, but the organizations are working to move forward with the project in 2020.
