Lettuce Recall Hits Georgia Schools
BIBB COUNTY, GA. – April 17, 2018 (11alive.com) As reported by 11alive.com, schools and stores in Georgia have started reacting to a lettuce recall after warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the CDC, chopped, bagged romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, could be contaminated with E. coli. The latest information from the CDC shows that as of April 18, 53 people in 16 different states had been infected with E. coli, all purportedly because of consumption of contaminated romaine lettuce. The outbreak began around March 13, and 31 people have been hospitalized. Five people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.
Georgia stores are pulling romaine lettuce from their shelves, and schools have discarded romaine lettuce to protect their students. Vequita Gore, cafeteria manager at Alexander II school in Bibb County, said the cafeteria staff had pulled all romaine lettuce and made sure no lettuce had been mixed with any other food. Schools in Bibb County have consulted their nutrition director, Timikel Sharpe, to ensure students still receive nutritional leafy greens in their meals. Bibb County schools also called to warn parents.
The recall has not been isolated to one brand, grower, supplier, or distributer of romaine lettuce but appears to be from the Yuma growing region. The CDC recommends consumers throw away all lettuce in their homes, even if people have already eaten it without issue. Before buying or consuming any romaine lettuce, consumers should confirm it did not come from the Yuma growing region. If this information cannot be confirmed, the CDC advises to not eat the lettuce.
