Harley-Davison Recalls 32 Models Totals 174,000 Motorcycle Due to Brake Failure Accident Risks

NHTSA States Numerous Crashes Resulting in Serious Injuries

On February 7, 2018, the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company announced a massive safety recall of approximately 174,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles due to a problem concerning deposit build up with the valves of equipped ABS Hydraulic Control Units. When the deposits accumulate within a valve inside the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, these deposits cause the braking system to stick which increases the risk of an accident. If you own a Harley Davidson, you can use a VIN search provided by the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration (NHTSA) to determine if your vehicle is subject to a recall. 

On January 29, 2018, the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration (NHTSA) released a safety alert, "Brakes may Fail Due to Not Flushing Brake Fluid." According to this NHTSA safety alert, 30+ Harley-Davidson motorcycle models could collect deposits with the valves of the ABS Hydraulic Control Units. These deposits could result in the ABS valves to stick causing the braking ability to be reduced, which can cause a serious accident. The safety alert number is #18V076000.

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling the following motorcycles for this ABS brake failure safety recall:

1. all 2008-2011 Touring, CVO Touring and VSRC motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), including Road King (FLHR), Road King Police (EFI) (FLHP), Road King Police (EFI) (FLHPE), Electra Glide Standard Police (EFI) (FLHTP), Electra Glide Classic (EFI) (FLHTC), Electra Glide Ultra Classic (EFI) (FLHTCU) and Street Glide (EFI) (FLHX);
2. 2008 VROD (VRSCAWA), CVO Road King 4 (FLHRSE4), Night Rod (VRSCDA), CVO Ultra Classic 3 (FLHTCUSE3), Night Rod Special (VRSCDXA);
3. 2008-2010 Road King Classic (EFI) (FLHRC), 2008-2009 Road Glide (EFI) (FLTR) and Electra Glide Standard (EFI) (FLHT);
4. 2009-2010 V-Rod (VRSCAW), 
5. 2009 CVO Ultra Classic (FLHTCUSE4) and CVO Road Glide 3 (FLTRSE3);
6. 2009-2011 Night Rod Special (VRSCDX) and V-Rod Muscle (VRSCF);
7. 2010 CVO Ultra Classic 5 (FLHTCUSE5) and CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE), 
8. 2010-2011 Electra Glide Ultra Limited (FLHTK) and Road Glide Custom (FLTRX);
9. 2011 Road Glide Ultra 103 (FLTRU103), Street Glide 103 (FLHX103), Road King Classic 103 (FLHRC103), CVO Ultra Classic 6 (FLHTCUSE6), CVO Road Glide Ultra (FLTRUSE), Road Glide Custom 103 (FLTRX103), and CVO Street Glide 2 (FLHXSE2) motorcycles.

The Recall's Corrective Action

The National Highway Safety Transportation Administration states that Harley-Davidson will be notifying both the owners and dealers of the recall and the corrective actions needing to be accomplished. The corrective action requires that the entire brake system is flushed out and the old brake fluid is replaced with new Platinum Label DOT 4 brake fluid. The corrective procedure will be performed by a Harley-Davidson dealership and is free of charge. The National Highway Safety Transportation Administration website states that the recall is expected to start on February 12, 2018. The owners of the affected models may call the Harley-Davidson customer service toll free number at 1-800-258-2464 for additional information or to schedule the brake safety recall service. Harley-Davidson's recall number is 0171.
