Recent Study Indicates Hormone Replacement Therapy Drug Prempro Doubles Risk of Death from Breast Cancer
Hormone Replacement Therapy has become common for women who are suffering from the effects of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) entails the use of hormones and progestins to artificially increase hormone levels and relieve menopausal symptoms including hot flashes. While prior studies have indicated a link between HRT and an increased risk of breast cancer, a recent study has found that women who have taken Prempro, which is manufactured by Pfizer, have double the risk of death from breast cancer when compared to breast cancer patients who have not taken Prempro.
There are over 9,000 Prempro lawsuits pending against, Pfizer's Wyeth division by women who took Prempro and developed breast cancer. If you or someone you love has been taking Prempro and has subsequently developed breast cancer, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Our pharmaceutical attorneys represent clients throughout Georgia who suffer adverse side effects from dangerous drugs.
The recent study conducted by the U.S. funded Women's Health Initiative (WHI) and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) analyzed data from 16,608 postmenopausal women with no prior hysterectomy. The results were that breast cancer patients who received Prempro hormone replacement therapy were twice as likely to die from breast cancer as those who received a placebo. Women taking Prempro also were more likely to develop more invasive types of breast cancer than those taking a placebo. Prempro has questioned the results of the study indicating that prior studies have found that Prempro reduces female mortality rates.
This evidence will provide additional support in litigation against Prempro for women who have developed invasive breast cancer or died from breast cancer after receiving Prempro as part of a HRT Prempro regimen. Juries have found in favor of breast cancer victims who have taken Prempro in 8 out of 13 cases that have reached a jury verdict often resulting in judgments exceeding a million dollars. As recently as December 30, 2010, a jury in Puerto Rico awarded $1.5 million in compensation to a woman who developed breast cancer after Prempro hormone replacement therapy.
