The Hoboken Train Accident and What May Have Gone Wrong

Georgia Train Accident Attorney Discusses Hoboken Train Accident and What May Have Gone Wrong

Train accidents seem to be occurring with more frequency over the past few years. While many of the train accidents do not involve injuries, a few train accidents have resulted in significant injuries and deaths. A recent transit train accident in Hoboken, New Jersey has reminded us yet again how catastrophic train accidents can be. On a seemingly normal Monday morning, a transit train came barreling into the Hoboken terminal at 21 miles per hour, twice the speed limit. The train slammed into the station's platform, and part of the roof collapsed onto the train. The accident left one person dead and hundreds more injured.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Says Cause Still Unknown

As with any accident, it will take months for questions to be answered about the Hoboken train accident. While the exact cause of the train accident is not known, the following facts, among others, are what investigators are working with to put the pieces back together:

• Approximately one minute before the accident, the train was traveling at 8 miles per hour.
• When the train entered the Hoboken train station, the train was traveling at 21 miles per hour. The speed limit when entering a train station is 10 miles per hour, so the train was traveling at slightly more than twice the speed limit.
• The train engineer activated the train's horn and bell before approaching the Hoboken terminal.
• A black box recorder was recovered. Data on this recorder indicates that the train suddenly accelerated before entering the Hoboken station.
• The train engineer used the brakes at the very last minute before striking the train station's platform.
• The train engineer does not recall the accident, claiming to have woken up on the floor after the train came to a complete stop.
• The train engineer stated that he felt well-rested and that his cell phone was turned off and inside his personal backpack.

There is still a significant amount of information that needs to be reviewed and evaluated for a definitive cause to be identified. Because the train was initially traveling under the speed limit and then suddenly accelerated before entering the Hoboken station, it is clear that something went wrong in that short period of time. Perhaps the train engineer collapsed, fell asleep, or accidentally pushed on the accelerator instead of the brakes, among other possibilities. Whatever the true cause of the accident may be, the fact remains that an innocent person has lost her life and so many more injured in an accident that could have been preventable.
