Dog Bites Three-Year-Old in Face in LaFayette, Georgia
A frightening dog attack in LaFayette, Georgia recently left a Georgia toddler with serious injuries. Police and emergency responders arrived on the scene to find a three-year-old with his face covered in blood. The babysitter said she woke up to the child screaming and realized her dog had bitten him. She was not sure how it occurred, but the child had a large laceration on his mouth and forehead. The dog involved was a mix between a Great Dane and Labrador. Thankfully, the child is expected to recover, and the dog was taken into the custody of the local animal shelter.

Protecting Your Children From Dog Attacks
There are steps that parents can take to keep their children safe around the dogs they will encounter. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) offers the following safety tips for children:
- Children should be advised not to approach any dog that is sleeping, eating, or chewing on a toy or bone. Dogs can be possessive of food or toys, and can startle if suddenly woken.
- Parents should not allow children to approach a scared, growling, or barking dog. Explain to children that these are signs a dog gives when he or she wants to be left alone.
- Children should not approach dogs they do not know, regardless of whether the dog is off-leash or on-leash.
- If a child wants to pet a dog with the owner present, the child should be taught to ask first, then carefully approach the dog with his or her palm out to allow the dog to sniff.
- Teach your child to be calm around dogs. Children should not be allowed to chase, ride on, or roughly pet a dog.
