Top Dangers of Summer

April 13, 2016

Summertime is right around the corner, and as many of us rejoice in the warmer weather, it is important to be aware of some of the dangers lurking during summer. Some summer activities bring a risk of injuries or even death. At Montlick and Associates, Attorneys at Law, we meet clients each summer who have experienced a wide array of injuries, so we will discuss a list of some common dangers that contribute to the majority of summertime accidents. Being aware of the dangers and preparing for hazards can help to protect you and your loved ones.

Drowning in Swimming Pools or Other Bodies of Water

Children are naturally drawn to water, but younger children must be closely supervised while swimming. During the summer months, kids and teens will flock to local swimming pools, lakes, rivers, and the ocean to cool down and have fun. While swimming is a fun activity, children are at risk for accidental drownings.

Make sure that all children are closely supervised and wear life vests when out boating or in a large body of water. Enroll your children in swim classes and take a CPR class so that you can react in the event of an emergency.

Playground Accidents

Children love to play outside, and playgrounds are a main summer activity for many. Playgrounds are also the site of numerous injuries each year. Supervise your child closely as he or she plays and also inspect playground equipment for dangers. Select a playground with a soft surface below, which could include sand, AstroTurf, wood chips, and more.

Car Accidents

With kids off school, many families will travel around by car over the summer. Roads will likely become crowded, increasing the incidence of car accidents. Stay off the roads during peak hours or take a short cut to reduce traffic woes. Hot weather additionally increases the chance of a tire blowout. Heat can warp and damage a tire, making it imperative that you closely monitor your tire's pressure and thread for signs of wear.

Amusement Parks

Summer is when the amusement parks become increasingly crowded with kids off school. Plan ahead before traveling to an amusement part. Look up the rides and height requirements so that you know what your child can safely ride. Make sure the park you are going to is regulated, and rides look well maintained. Parks are also a common site of falls due to crowded conditions. Watch where you walk and wear comfortable shoes to minimize your risk of a slip and fall.
