Homeless Man Hit and Killed by MARTA Train

November 09, 2015

Recently, a homeless man who was born in India, but became a United States citizen, was tragically killed after being struck by a train pulling into a Georgia rail station. The 55 year old man had somehow wandered onto the tracks and was in the path of the train as it entered the station at about 5:30 a.m. Police were able to notify the man's family. No passengers were on the train at the time of the accident. The station had to be shut down for about five hours while the accident was investigated.

MARTA Injury Rates Increase

MARTA made headlines recently for another crash that resulted in several injuries. This incident involved a MARTA bus that was involved in an accident after another driver ran a stop sign. The accident resulted in injuries to eight bus passengers and four in other vehicles.

Although it appears from initial investigations that the victim in this case was in an area where he should not have been, his death does add to the overall MARTA accident rate and will surely be investigated thoroughly so that safety regulators understand how it occurred as well as how they can prevent future like accidents.

Train Accidents Can Result in Serious Injuries and Death

When a train collides with a person, another train or an automobile, the results can be catastrophic. Passengers on the train or in another motor vehicle can sustain serious injuries or perish in the crash. All railway companies have the duty to maintain high standards in order to protect passengers. If you have been injured in a train accident, contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.

There are also several major causes of train accidents in Georgia and across the country. In some cases, pedestrians or the driver of a vehicle will attempt to cross the railroad track or will stop on the tracks, in spite of warning signals. Other times, train derailments can result in trains careening off their tracks and into other trains, structures or pedestrians.

Train malfunctions result in a number of accidents annually. Thus, it is the duty of the railroad company to ensure their trains are well maintained and in proper functioning order. This includes maintaining all railroad crossing gates and lights. When an accident occurs due to a warning signal that is not functioning, the rail line can be held accountable for the damages that result. Operator negligence must also be considered in the event of a train accident. Moreover, the use of drugs or alcohol, distraction, and drowsiness can all result in serious accidents.
