NTSB Reports 119 Fatalities Caused By Electric Bikes, and E-Scooters

December 27, 2022

According to a news report published by USNews.com, a study released by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board stated that there have been about 120 people killed while riding e-bikes or e-scooters in the past five years.

The NTSB only investigates traffic collisions and collects crash data. The agency does not have regulatory authority, but its research helps to create new regulations. Over the past few years, the NTSB has been collecting accident data on “micro-mobility” injuries and deaths.

In the United States, there are several government agencies that have jurisdiction over e-bike and e-scooter safety. The NTSB is helping these agencies gather data to create an accurate understanding of how many people are injured or killed using micro-mobility vehicles. The popularity of e-scooters and e-bikes has spread throughout the United States, particularly in college towns and large cities where they are used without oversight.

According to the new report, the e-scooter and e-bike growth industry is growing quickly, and it is unclear how transportation safety experts assess the safety of these forms of transportation and how to keep the riders safe.

The NTSB gathered news reports for micro-mobility accidents and then cross-checked those against the databases maintained by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's databases, and the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety. The NTSB discovered a lack of standardization in accounting for e-bike and e-scooter fatalities and injuries. So, the NTSB made provided several key recommendations to the CPSC, the NHTSA, and the Federal Highway Administration on how to gather accident data for e-bikes and e-scooters.

The NTSB also asked for specific e-bike product codes to be included with the national injury tracking system. This will help the agencies collect the correct data and find products that may be hazardous to the public.
