All-Terrain Vehicle Off-Road Vehicle Safety Tips
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, people who own or rent ATVs must be aware of the dangers and important safety tips prior to riding them.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's website refers to ATVs as off-highway vehicles (OHVs). The risks of operating ATVs are serious and life-threatening. These risks include collisions, overturning, and passenger ejection. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also states its latest data shows an average of 700 ATV-related deaths and 100,000 emergency room visits due to ATV accidents.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's latest accident report states that there were more than 2,100 ATV accident fatalities from 2016 through 2018. Those figures include all-terrain vehicles, utility-terrain vehicles, and recreational off-highway vehicles. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's statistics, ATVs were involved in 75% of all OHV accident deaths, and about 300 fatalities involved children who were under the age of 16.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission's website also reported that there were more than 112,000 ATV-related accident injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2020.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission provided the following safety tips:
- Wear helmets and all other protective gear
- Receive driving training from a qualified ATV instructor
- Follow the manufacturer's guidelines
- Avoid riding on public roads
- Never drink alcohol or consume intoxicating drugs prior to driving
- Riders 16 years old or younger should only drive age-appropriate ATV models.
