Unilever Facing Potential Lawsuits After Benzene Discovered in its Dry Shampoo Aerosol Products

According to a recall news report published on abc7.com, Unilever has announced the recall of 19 dry shampoos after it was discovered that they contained a cancer-causing ingredient. Unilever issued its voluntary recall of certain dry shampoo products, including Dove, Suave, TRESemme, and other popular brands due to Benzene contamination. Benzene exposure can occur through skin contact, inhalation, and accidental consumption. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, exposure to Benzene has been linked to cancers such as leukemia and various blood cancers. Benzene exposure is dangerous depending on the duration and dose of contact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states on its website.

Unilever announced that the company would recall the products "out of an abundance of caution" since the company hasn't received adverse event reports relating to the Benzene contamination.

• Dove Dry Shampoo Go Active
• Nexxus Dry Shampoo Refreshing Mist
• Nexxus Inergy Foam Shampoo
• Suave Dry Shampoo Hair Refresher

The news report states that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware of the issue and the recall. The FDA will work with Unilever to warn the public and ensure the recalled products are pulled off of retail shelves. Online retail stores will also be provided with recall notices. In some cases, small retailers fail to adequately remove recalled products from their inventory, posing a serious risk to consumers. Unilever is urging consumers to stop using the affected aerosol dry shampoo products and to visit its website for product reimbursements.
