Shelter-In-Place Advisory Placed After Tesla Megapack Battery Fire

September 26, 2022

According to a news report published on breitbart.com, a Tesla Megapack battery erupted into flames at the PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California.

The fire led to a shelter-in-place advisory that lasted for twelve hours due to the toxic smoke created by the fire. County officials warned that the toxic smoke could linger in the area for several days once the fire was extinguished.

The KSBW news report stated that the Tesla Megapack battery fire started at approximately 1:30 AM, according to PG&E’s comm manager, Jeff Smith. There were no injuries or fatalities that transpired as a result of the fire.

North County Fire Protection District, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, and Pacific Gas & Electric all issued shelter-in-place warnings for local areas for twelve hours. The advisories were published on an interactive map showing the affected areas and road closings. Residents who lived in the affected area were urged to close all windows and turn off ventilation systems because of the hazardous waste material that entered the atmosphere during the Tesla Megapack fire.

A portion of Highway 1 was closed by Caltrans while fire-rescue crews battled the battery fire. The California Highway Patrol tweeted that the closures were extended because of air quality concerns.

Tesla and PG&E constructed the Elkhorn Battery Facility house, a 182.5-megawatt battery energy storage facility, which is operated and owned by PG&E. However, Tesla and PG&E designed, built, and maintain the battery energy storage facility.
