Dog Attack Lawsuit Lawyers Reveal Shocking Dog Attack Statistics

August 08, 2022

According to a news report published on dogsbite.org, in 2020, five tragic dog bite deaths were caused by dogs from two or more different dog breeds. However, five dog breeds have been connected to at least one fatality, and those dog breeds include Labrador retrievers, Belgian Malinois, American bully-mix, Cane Corsos, and Bull Terriers. The statistical information used by DogsBite.org can be verified through news reports and other dog bite fatality research.

2020 Research and 16-Year Period Recap

46 United States dog bite-related deaths transpired in 2020. The dog bite research discovered that Pit Bulls caused 72% (33) of these fatalities, although Pit Bulls only make up approximately 6% of the total dog population in the United States. According to DogBite.org, dangerous dogs tragically killed 568 U.S. citizens from 2005 to 2020. Pit Bulls (380) and Rottweilers (51) accounted for 76% (431) of these fatal dog attacks. 37 various dog breeds caused the other fatal dog attacks.

In 2020, "baiting" bull breeds and fighting dog breeds caused 87% of all fatal dog attacks. Other dog breeds that caused fatalities in 2020 include German Shepherds, American Bulldogs, Mastiffs, and other mixed dog breeds. At least ten different dog breeds caused 46 human deaths in 2020.

2020 dog attack data shows that 33% (15) of fatal dog attack victims were kids ages nine years and younger, 7% of deaths involved children ages 10 to 18, and 61% of fatal dog attack victims were ages 19 years and older.

In 2020, there were three fatal dog attack victims in the 19-29 age group, which is a rare age group in deadly dog attacks. All three victims were men ages 25, 26, and 27, and they were tragically mauled to death by Pit Bulls. Of all men 25 years or older who were tragically killed by dangerous dogs, 92% of the victims were killed by Pit Bulls. Moreover, Pit Bulls were tragically killed in almost all age groups in 2020:

  • 0-2 years (9),
  • 5-9 years (2),
  • 19-29 years (3),
  • 30-49 years (2),
  • 50-69 years (9) and
  • 70+ years (8).

Compared to all other dog breeds, infants and adults over 50 were attacked most often.

In 2020, 43% of fatal dog attacks involved more than one dog. 60% of multi-dog attacks in 20202 involved two or three dogs, and 40% involved at least four or more dogs. 70%  involved two or more Pit Bull dogs. In 2020, 24% of fatal dog attacks happened off of the dog owner's property. Pit bulls were involved in 73% of all off-property fatal attacks, and 82% of off-property deadly dog attacks involved numerous dogs.

According to DogBite.org, family dogs accounted for 59% of all fatal dog attacks. Pit bulls were responsible for 67% of these fatal family dog attacks. 55% of family dog attacks involved killing a family member versus 45% of the victims who were non-family members. 11% of canine-inflicted fatalities involved a family dog mauling its owner. Pit bulls caused 40% of the owner-directed deadly attacks; two mastiffs and one bull breed inflicted the other fatalities.

In 2020, 22% of fatal dog attack victims were either living temporarily or visiting with the attacking dog's owner when the fatal attack ensued. Pit Bulls accounted for 89% of these fatalities.

The state of Illinois led all U.S. states in fatal dog attacks with six deaths. Pit bulls committed 83% of these casualties. Florida followed Ilinois with five fatal dog attacks. Georgia, California, and Louisiana had three fatal dog attacks in 2020. In 2020, it was discovered that there was an underreporting of fatal dog attacks in Texas and California.
