Georgia Power Encourages Boat Safety This Summer
COLUMBUS, GEORGIA - According to an online news report published on wtvm.com, Georgia Power is urging boaters to brush up on boat safety practices as summer kicks off.
Georgia Power owns seventeen lakes throughout Georgia, and when visiting one of their lakes, representatives with Georgia Power are asking boaters to exercise the following safety tips:
- Know Georgia's boating laws
- Wear a life preserver
- Watch for storm fronts moving in before heading out on a lake
- Turn on all lights when boating at night
- Maintain an emergency contact plan
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health and SPLASH, this year has already experienced several boating fatalities. Moreover, "drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children 1 to 4 years of age." Georgia Department of Public Health and SPLASH hope this year's public outreach will decrease the number of fatal drownings and injuries.
The news report states that Georgia officials also want the public to understand the difference in risks between pools and bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. Natural bodies of water are usually more dangerous because they have changing currents, limited visibility, unknown water depths, and hidden dangers under the water.
