Mandatory Annual Elevator Safety Inspections in Georgia Aren't Being Enforced

October 31, 2021

GEORGIA - A news story published on ajc.com reports that Georgia regulators state that they are "in the dark" concerning the issue of thousands of elevators being due or past due for safety checks.

An elevator collapse in an Atlanta high-rise building on August 31 uncovered the issue of elevators being overdue for its manditory annual safety inspection.  The news report states that state regulators should have been aware of the owner's failure to comply with the law and the elevator should have been inspected prior to the tragedy.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, state regulators and officials were not aware the elevator was over a year behind in its annual inspection.  The report states that a broken computer database has left government regulators "in the dark" as to how many of elevators, moving sidewalks, and escalators are overdue for inspections in Georgia.

State officials with Insurance Commissioner John King are blaming a jury-rigged system that was installed ten years ago under a former commissioner and their successor kept the broken system in place.  The system was designed to keep track of elevators inspections to make certain all elevators, moving sidewalks, and esculators are in compliance.

According to Deputy Fire Safety Commissioner Mark Revenew, they "find elevator inspection certificates that are two years old."

Although a news system is in place, the system is essentially "starting from scratch" in creating a new elevator inspection overdue list.  So, state regulators will not know which elevators are past due for inspection until July 2022.
