Uber Rider Files a Lawsuit Against Uber for False Imprisonment, Kidnapping, and Battery
A civil lawsuit has been filed on behalf of an Uber customer who was taken on a horrific Uber ride with an Uber driver who later went on a shooting spree killing six people and injuring two other people. According to the lawsuit, Uber was not reachable by the company's 24-hour helpline, which would have "deactivated" the crazed Uber driver who began a fatal shooting rampage later that day.
The lawsuit filed against Uber accuses the company for not responding to rider complaints against the driver at the time. As a result, the lawsuit's complainant says he was taken on the frightening ride by the crazed Uber driver. The man's lawsuit alleges the Uber driver was driving through red lights, crashed into other motor vehicles, battered the victim, kidnapped the victim, and committed false imprisonment.
The victim was able to escape the terrifying ride by jumping out of the Uber driver's vehicle. The victim sustained serious injuries during his escape, and he called 911.
Uber claims to have a 24-hour helpline that allows Uber riders to notify Uber of dangerous conduct committed by its drivers. However, when the Uber rider attempted to contact Uber's helpline several times, no one answered his calls. The suspect then shot several people.
The Uber driver has been sentenced in criminal proceedings to life in prison and is incarcerated at the Manistee County prison. Following his arrest, the suspect told law enforcement officers that his phone's Uber app "controlled him and made him attack people."
