Marines Blame Pandemic Burnout Caused Fatal Amphibious Assault Vehicle Accident That Killed Nine Troops

October 12, 2021

A new report was issued by the Undersea Rescue Command concerning the cause of an amphibious assault vehicle accident that tragically killed nine troops.  The U.S. troops were killed when an issue with an amphibious assault vehicle caused the vehicle to sink hundreds of feet into the Pacific Ocean.

The report was released last Wednesday and did not condone the actions of Marine Corps officials who failed to oversee the pre-deployment training properly.  The report scrutinizes what a senior military leader concluded were different contributing factors.  Lieutenant General Carl Mundy III reported that it is a mistake to discount or overlook the responsibility of the commanders, their staff, and troops before the disaster on July 30, 2020.

The report states that several Marine officers were removed from their positions following the accident.  The Marine Corps investigators had previously found that the troop deaths were preventable. However, shoddy maintenance, inspections, complacency, and inadequate training led to the tragedy.

The latest Marine Corps investigation, along with the parallel Navy inquiry, were released together.  The reports alleges that there were communication issues between the services that day.

The mother of one of the victims stated that she obtained thousands of pages of military accident investigation documents.  She stated that the pandemic "seemed to have distracted Marine Corps commanders from taking required safety precautions."
