Hyundai Kona EV Battery Fire Recall Not Going Well According to Owners
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - Hyundai's Kona full-electric crossover owners are complaining that Hyundai is botching a major recall. The complaints include poor communication and repair delays. Hyundai said that it would replace the defective battery systems in about 82,000 Hyundai's Kona electric vehicles (EV) after reports of Kona electric vehicles catching fire.
According to the Kona EV owners, Hyundai is not providing them with a plan on how and when Hyundai will fix the defective battery system.
Hyundai stated that customer safety is its top priority, and the company is striving to prevent customer inconvenience during the recall. The statement did not address the lack of communication and delays.
According to the news story, the lack of openness has caused many Kona EV owners to vent their frustrations on social media platforms and to begin the process of seeking compensation. In November of 2020, about 170 Kona EV owners filed a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai. The owners were seeking about $8 million or $7,000 each in monetary compensation per owner.
In October, Hyundai submitted a software upgrade to fix the battery fire issue. However, at least one fire occurred after the software upgrade. Hyundai then agreed to replace the electric vehicles' batteries with batteries manufactured by LG Energy Solution's battery division. The owners stated that the software update reduced the battery's capacity to about 90%. One customer stated that a public charging station then did not allow him to recharge his Kona EV.
