Rideshare Drivers Demand Improved Safety Measures Following an Uber Driver's Kidnapping

March 22, 2021

A group of rideshare drivers has sent rideshare companies a list of demands to improve safety.  The demands include passenger verification, mandatory profile photos, and voice-activated panic buttons.  The list of safety demands is in response to a recent kidnapping and sexual assault of a Chicago Uber driver.

According to a news report from NBC 5, the rideshare drivers have stated that they feel they are aware of the risks and believe more protections for drivers are essential.

A female rideshare driver stated that she is leery of rideshare customers and being a female makes the situation much more difficult.

According to the Independent Drivers Guild, rideshare drivers have been increasingly targeted and attacked by carjackers in recent months.  The organization aims to negotiate additional safety protections for its members.  The Independent Drivers Guild has released its list of demands which include app functions like passenger verification, mandatory profile photos, and voice-activated panic buttons.  The group states that drivers cannot get on a rideshare app without first taking a selfie photo without a face mask on.  However, people frequently hop into a rideshare car without similar safety practices, and the drivers have no idea who they really have in their car.

The panic for rideshare drivers is due to a recent incident where a 29-year-old woman Uber drive picked up a dangerous passenger near a restaurant.  The passenger stepped into her GMC Terrain, displayed a gun.  The passenger then ordered the Uber driver to drive to an alleyway where he sexually assaulted her and then robbed her.  He then ran from the scene.

Rideshare drivers have been reporting other violent incidents over the past several months.  One incident left a rideshare driver partially paralyzed after he was shot in the back by an angry passenger.
