Hit-and-Run Accidents Are a Growing Problem in Florida

BARTOW,  FL - Hit-and-run accidents are a growing issue in the Tampa Bay area and throughout Florida.  

According to ABC Action News, investigative reporters have discovered troubling statistics such as the close rate of hit-and-run cases and law enforcement's success rate in finding the criminals who caused the crime. 

Pedestrians are usually severely injured or tragically killed when struck by a motor vehicle.  ABC Action News reports there were about 98,000 hit-and-run accidents in the state in 2017.  Law enforcement only cited one in eight hit-and-run drivers for leaving the scene of an accident.  

Florida Highway Patrol Corporal James A. White Jr. stated that when a driver leaves the accident scene, the driver has committed a felony, and law enforcement then begins a criminal investigation.

In Tampa, Florida, there were 134 families who suffered the injury or loss of a loved one in a hit-and-run accident.  The latest statistics for Hillsborough County (2017) showed more than 5,000 drivers leaving the scene of an accident.  Last year, the county had twelve pedestrian deaths.  The Florida Highway Patrol reports that their agency has solved around 5,300 cases in Tampa since in 2017.
