AAA Study Reports Colorado's Annual Pedestrian Fatalities are up 89%
DENVER, CO - According to a study conducted by AAA Colorado and AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of annual pedestrian deaths in the State of Colorado doubled in 2020. The study reports that Colorado's annual pedestrian fatalities are up 89% in three decades. Colorado's death toll even surpassed the nation's 55% increase.
AAA's study asserts that speed, darkness, and alcohol are the three most common causes of fatal pedestrian accidents.
According to the director of public affairs for AAA Colorado, Skyler McKinley, Colorado is outpacing the national average in the number of fatal pedestrian accidents, and government officials must do more to protect its citizens. AAA Colorado's statistical data shows that the number of fatal pedestrian accidents at non-intersection locations that do not have crosswalks rose by 70% in just ten years. The study also found that most fatal pedestrian accidents happened on major roads in urban areas with a lot of traffic volume.
AAA Colorado further denotes that minority pedestrian deaths grew by a greater percentage than non-minority pedestrians. Mr. McKinley stated that the data shows that pedestrians and drivers need to be more careful traveling at night in urban areas to avoid a pedestrian accident. Mr. McKinley believes that state and local government officials must consider reducing speed limits in high-risk areas and make changes to road design in areas with heavy pedestrian volume.
According to Mr. McKinley, pedestrians have a legal right to use Colorado's transportation infrastructure. People should use the public infrastructure without worrying they will be injured or lose their lives.
