Tragic, Fatal Helicopter Accident in Jones County, Mississippi (MS)

According to a helicopter crash news story published by, one person was tragically killed in a helicopter accident in Jones County, Mississippi.*

The helicopter crash early morning in the Glade community located off of Highway 15 South close to the Tuckers Crossing, according to a Public Information Officer.  Dana Bumgardner, the Jones County Fire Council Public Information Officer, stated that a 911 call was received at approximately 8:45 in the morning.  The 911 caller stated that a helicopter had crashed on a section of private property. 

Numerous Jones County volunteer firefighters responded to the helicopter accident scene and were joined by the Jones County Sheriff's Department.  When fire and emergency rescue crews arrived that the scene of the helicopter crash, the firefighters worked hard to put out the fire.  The fire was ignited by a magnesium fire, according to Dana Bumgardner. Magnesium fires are challenging to extinguish they are not conventional.

The MD500 helicopter had one occupant during the crash, according to the Jones County Coroner's Office.  The pilot was offended as a man from the state of Florida.  

According to Dana Bumgardner, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board is on the way to investigate the helicopter crash.  The agencies will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the helicopter accident.

The victim was a pilot for Signature Utility Services, which is a utility company headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.  The service trims trees close to power lines and in hard to trim places by using a helicopter.  The accident happened in a wooded area that is difficult for most motor vehicles to reach. 

According to Bumgardner, the helicopter used a large chainsaw attached to the helicopter.  The helicopter then flies along powerlines trimming the tree branches away from the powerlines.  The pilot was on the first flight of the day when the accident occurred.  The accident took several hours to clear.  The accident is currently under investogation.
