The "Be Seen!" Safety Campaign May Prevent Pedestrian Accidents

December 28, 2020

Homer Police Ask Pedestrians to Help Avoid Pedestrian Accidents By Being Seen in "Be Seen!" Safety Campaign

Homer, NY - According to an online news article, a concerned citizen and a severe pedestrian accident have inspired the Homer Police Department to launch its "Be Seen!" pedestrian safety campaign.  The "Be Seen!" campaign is designed to remind pedestrians how to "Be Seen!" by drivers in hopes of reducing pedestrian accidents in the community.  The campaign's format provides helpful tips that pedestrians can use to minimize their risk of sustaining an accident while walking, running, and biking.

The campaign's first tip advises pedestrians to use marked crosswalks at intersections or when present.  Crosswalks typically have several safety features such as street lighting, illuminated signs, traffic devices, speed bumps and painted walkways.  To stay safe, it is essential to always "look left, look right, and look left one more time" before attempting to cross a street.  It is also essential that you use pedestrian signal buttons when available and, more importantly, always wait for the go ahead signal before crossing a street.

One of the most common pedestrian-car collisions involves pedestrians walking on the side of the road.  Always use sidewalks along roadways to minimize your risk of being hit by a car.  If no sidewalks are available, face traffic as you walk to your destination and move as far away from the road as possible.  Look at the drivers as they approach you.  Are they looking at a cellphone? Do they make eye contact with you?  These indications can help  better prepare you to take evasive action should the driver be engaged in distracted driving.

Be seen!  Make sure motorists can see you after dark or in inclement weather conditions such as rain, fog, or snow.  The best way to stay visible is to wear bright-colored, reflective clothing.

Pay attention while walking.  Many serious accidents are caused by pedestrians who are walking while using their phones.  These pedestrian accidents often occur when motorists are backing out of a driveway or parking lot spot.
