The GHTA Links SUVs and Cellphones to the Rise in Fatal Pedestrian Accidents

December 10, 2020

According to an online report, the number of fatal pedestrian accidents has been on the rise in the United States starting in 2009.

According to the Pedestrian Safety Coordinator at Watch for Me CT, Amy Watkins, the issue is a national problem. According to Amy Watkins, the number of fatal pedestrian accidents since 2009 has risen by 53%, and the number of all other accident deaths has increased by 2%. The articles assert that the most common reason for the uptick in fatal accidents is the increase in SUVs and smartphones.

The Governors Highway Safety Association publishes statistical data about all types of accidents and works to identify ways to make roadways safer throughout the United States. In the development of these reports, the Governors Highway Safety Association assesses fatal pedestrian accidents by taking into account light conditions, vehicle type, location, the population of the area, alcohol, and other drugs.

Watkins stated that driving distractions are another contributing factor in the increasing numbers of pedestrian fatalities. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, the number of active cellphones in the United States grew by 400% from 2009 to 2018.

The Governors Highway Safety Association also reports that pedestrians are twice as likely to die in a pedestrian accident with an SUV versus a car. The number of light trucks and SUVs sold annually grew from 48% to 69% in the United States.

The number of pedestrian deaths caused by cars grew by 53%, while the number of pedestrian deaths caused by SUVs increased by 81%.
