Caution Warranted When Buying Toys for the Upcoming Holiday Season
USA- Toys are on holiday shopping lists and it is important to remember that these products can present dangers to the children to whom they are gifted.
It is important to review safety information as well as the recommended ages for toys which you plan to purchase. One major concern regarding the age of children is the choking hazard presented by small objects.
In recent years, recalls related to toys have dropped. Last year only twelve toys were subject to recalls. One of those recalls was related to lead. As compared to 2008, the number of recalls has dropped significantly. In 2008, 172 toys were recalled, and of that total, nineteen contained lead. In order to make the right decision related to toy purchases, the first step is to check the label for age requirements. Secondly, select toys that meet high-quality standards. Instructions for the toy should be clear and included on any labels. Read safety warnings related to the toy to determine if there are risks that you did not anticipate.
Packaging can also present a risk to small children, and it is important to throw away packaging items prior to allowing children to play. Packing peanuts and plastic bags create significant risks for children. A good rule of thumb is to remember that toys for children three years old and younger should always be larger than the opening of a toilet paper roll. Magnets are extremely dangerous to children and can cause serious internal injury if swallowed. Toys with long strings and chords create strangulation risks. Also, avoid any toy containing potentially toxic chemicals.
