Packaging can also present a risk to small children, and it is important to throw away packaging items prior to allowing children to play. Packing peanuts and plastic bags create significant risks for children. A good rule of thumb is to remember that toys for children three years old and younger should always be larger than the opening of a toilet paper roll. Magnets are extremely dangerous to children and can cause serious internal injury if swallowed. Toys with long strings and chords create strangulation risks. Also, avoid any toy containing potentially toxic chemicals.
