Smith and Wesson Recall M&P Shield EZ Pistols Due to Accidental Discharge Defect
USA- Ammoland.com writes that Smith and Wesson Inc. recently recalled two models of its M&P shield easy pistols.
The hammers on the recalled firearms were reportedly cracked. As a result of the defect, the guns could discharge multiple times without depressing the trigger. Although only two hammers had the reported defect, the risk of injury related to the defect has led the company to issue the recall. The recall applies to models manufactured from March of 2020, through October 31st, 2020.
Owners should immediately cease use of any M&P Shield EZ pistols until they can determine whether those guns are subject to the recall. Smith and Wesson can inspect and repair the damaged guns if defects are identified. If Smith and Wesson determines that the hammer from the gun is defective, the company will replace that component at no cost to the owner. The process of completing repairs is expected to take approximately ten business days. Shipping costs will be covered by the company as well.
Most consumer products can be recalled by the government. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has no right to issue recalls related to firearms. Although the government does regulate firearms, those regulations do not include the ability to make decisions related to product safety. Gun manufacturers can issue recalls, but they will only do so voluntarily.
