Hit-and-Run Accidents Are All Too Common on Florida Roads

November 24, 2020

FLORIDA- Hit-and-run collisions occur frequently in the Sunshine State.

Studies indicate that Florida ranks third in the nation when it comes to fatal hit-and-run crashes. Florida even has a hit-and-run awareness month, which urges drivers to stay at the scene of an accident. Despite the severe consequences facing fleeing drivers in 2019 there were more than 105,000 collisions in which drivers left the crash site.

The worst-hit-and-run accidents, those collisions that result in fatal injuries, tend occur at night or in the early morning hours.  Drivers in these conditions may be more inclined to leave as they suspect that they will not be apprehended or identified.  Not only is it illegal to flee, but leaving a crash site can result in worse consequences for victims.  After all, in many cases, the only person around to report injuries related to a hit-and-run will be the driver who caused that crash.  Drivers who leave the scene of a collision will face mandatory minimum sentences, and in severe cases, many years behind bars.

According to AAA, these unfortunate events take place more frequently than many people realize.  In fact, one out of every five fatal pedestrian collisions involves a driver who leaves the crash scene.  Cyclists are also often killed by hit-and-run drivers as motorists who strike vulnerable road users tend to have the ability to drive away from the crash site.  Reports often indicate that drivers who flee the scene of a crash do so because they are afraid of facing legal consequences.  These drivers are more inclined to be under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license, or have warrants out for their arrest for unrelated criminal activity. The drivers in these situations may panic and flee to avoid facing serious criminal penalties.
