Total of 41 Fatal E-Scooter E-Bike and Hoverboard Accidents Reported in Three Years
USA- CBSNEWS.COM reports that Americans have been riding e-scooters for recreation and transportation throughout the country.*
E-bikes and hoverboards are also popular throughout the United States. Sadly, according to the United States Consumer Protection Safety Commission, these devices have killed at a minimum, 41 individuals. Another 133,000 people sustained injuries between 2017 and 2019 as a result of these devices. Such accidents are on the rise, and according to records, more emergency room visits resulting from scooters and similar products are occurring each year.
E-scooters were involved in 27 of the fatal accidents. Most of these deadly incidents involved riders who were in collisions with another motor vehicle. The majority of victims were male. Several individuals also died in crashes involving e-scooters and pedestrians. Four fatal hoverboard crashes, also occurred as well as ten e-bike fatalities. Many of the victims involved in hoverboard accidents are children fourteen years old and younger. E-scooter victims are more likely to be adults age 25 and older.
In 2018, E-scooters surpassed rental bikes as a form of micro-mobility transportation. In some cities, including Atlanta, the use of e-scooters at night has been banned. In Tennessee, a car struck and killed a young man on an e-scooter in Nashville, leading to bans preventing e-scooter use at night in that state as well.
