Park Avenue Railroad Crossing Creates Risks in LaGrange, Georgia
LAGRANGE, GA- LAGRANGENEWS.COM writes that the railroad crossing at Park Avenue is prone to accidents.*
Within the last year, four crashes have occurred at the location. A Chevrolet pickup truck was the most recent vehicle involved in a train crash at the location. Now the Georgia Department of Transportation is working on improving safety at the intersection. GDOT expects to begin the project in 2021.
According to the driver who was involved in the most recent collision, he drove his vehicle over the tracks and did not hear or see the train prior to entering the crossing. The individual sustained injuries but survived the crash. That driver was identified as a 23-year-old man. Traffic delays resulted as well, as the train had to stop while an investigation unfolded. The conductor of the train stated that he had blown the train's whistle prior to getting to the intersection. A witness on-site at the time of the crash confirmed that the whistle sounded prior to the incident.
Proposed improvements include adding active warning devices, gates, bells, and lights at the crossing. The responsibility of making train crossings in Georgia safe falls on the Department of Transportation's railroad safety unit. No timeline or information regarding the funding for improvements at the Park Avenue crossing is available at this point in time. Some locals have stated that gates used to be placed at the crossing, but there is no evidence that such is the case. There is a sign stating do not stop on the tracks and flashing lights marking the crossing. Safety advocates state that trains are also frequently closer and moving faster than they originally appear.
