Lawn Mower Accidents Cause Serious Injury to Kids and Adults

May 11, 2013

There are many types of accidents that people may anticipate, which can pose a risk of injury to children, but one type of hazard that most parents do not anticipate are lawn mower accidents.  As the weather changes and lawn mowing season is upon us, it is important for parents to be aware of the potential risk posed by lawn mowers to young children.

This is not just a theoretical issue because there have been a number of serious injuries to children caused by lawn mower accidents during recent weeks including the following:

  • A boy suffered severe laceration to his arms and legs when he was run over by a lawn mower.
  • A girl lost both of her feet when her father ran over her when backing up on a riding style lawn mower.
  • A boy was hospitalized in critical condition after the lawn mower he and his grandfather were riding on rolled over.

These recent lawn mower accidents are not isolated events.  Lawn mower accidents involving both electric push mowers and riding mowers cause serious injury to both adults and children far more frequently than many people realize.  During a recent twelve month period, over 83,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms because of injuries suffered in lawn mower accidents according to the Consumer Protection Safety Commission.  Of those treated for lawn mower injuries during this same period, almost 3,800 children ages 14 and under were among those injured.

While these injuries often occur because lawn mowers are left unattended and accessible to kids, they may also lack safety equipment that would reduce the risk of injury.  When the vehicle design or manufacturing process creates an increased risk of rolling over on a consumer or the device lacks emergency shut off features to reduce the risk of children being injured by the blades, the manufacturer may be liable for product defects.

If you or someone close to you is injured in an accident involving a lawn mower, you should seek immediate medical advice and treatment.  The lawn mower should also be preserved in the same condition so that it can be inspected to identify the cause of the accident and determine if product defects in the device, such as lack of safety features, contributed to the accident.
