Uber Drivers Accused of Sexual Assault or Abuse by Passengers

September 22, 2020

New York, N.Y. — Stories of alleged sexual harassment, abuse and rape have emerged from passengers in Uber vehicles at the hands of drivers.

A CNN investigation revealed  that there have been at least 103 Uber drivers in the U.S. who have been accused of sexually assaulting or abusing passengers in the past four years.  Many of the women passengers who were attacked by the accused drivers had been drinking or were inebriated  at the time of the incident.  At least 31 drivers have been convicted for crimes including forcible touching and rape.  Unfortunately, there is no publicly available data for the number of sexual assaults by Uber drivers or for drivers of other rideshare companies because the companies have not released this information.  Datta was gathered by an in-depth review in 20 major U.S. cities of federal court records and county county databases.

Uber wants passengers and drivers alike to feel safe and be safe while using their app and is working to involve safer measures throughout the company.  The company posted a sexual assault prevention video recently to help create a safer community and has plans to create a safety center. The safety center will allow an app user to designate contacts to share trip details with, while that person is riding in an Uber vehicle.  It also plans to host forums nationwide to further help discuss the issue of violence with hopes of finding solutions and creating deeper conversations. Uber also plans to include a 911 button in the app that is accessible to riders and drivers.
