Construction Company That Lost Two Workers in Virginia Accident Has Two Prior Worker Deaths

September 11, 2020

SUFFOLK, VA- The writes that two men died in an accident that occurred at a construction site in Suffolk. The men were working to build an Amazon distribution center.*

The two men killed in the crash included a 32-year-old from Honduras and a 34-year-old from Mexico. Co-workers posted tributes to the victims following the deadly accident. Social media posts indicate that one of the men had a six-year-old daughter, whose birthday was the day of the fatal incident.

When calls went out regarding the accident, three local cities sent crews to the worksite. The reports stated that a building had collapsed, and yet it appears that most of the structure remains standing. Photos indicate that one part of the frame is twisted, and a lift appears to have been crushed. Reports have not yet detailed anything further information about what caused the tragic incident. Investigators are still working on learning the course of events that cost these two men their lives.

The company that both men worked for, Eastern Constructors, is based in Louisiana and was subcontracted out to perform the work on the distribution center. Records indicate that the company previously lost employees in two other accidents. The first of the incidents took place in 2016 in Virginia when a worker fell to his death. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) cited the company for three safety violations following their investigation into that accident. The second incident took place in North Carolina in 2017 when a steel bar fell on two men, killing one and injuring the other. Again, OSHA investigated and cited the company for multiple safety violations. Eastern will now again be the subject of an OSHA investigation. Only one other worker has died in the state this year.
