Most Boat Accidents Are Preventable: How to Boat Safely This Labor Day Weekend

September 04, 2020

USA- Boating can lead to dangerous situations when people are not cautious. The importance of boating safely is a paramount concern for Floridians, who are about to enter Labor Day weekend - one of many hot and boat-friendly weekends for the state. Boating is fun, but with the joys of hitting the water, it is important to remember that danger can strike unexpectedly and fast when on a boat.

Florida had 961,266 registered boats in 2019. With so many people enjoying the state's waterways, remembering the regulations and laws that are in place to keep everyone safe is crucial. After all, the majority of boat accidents are the result of human mistakes.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that the boat operator should always be focused and alert. Just like on the road, there are speed limits on the water, and it is important, regardless of the limit, not to travel too fast.

Boat operator licenses are needed if a person plans to head out on a vessel with a ten horsepower engine or more. Still, even on other boats, safety is important, and anyone on the water should take the time to learn the rules.

Sadly, many people who lose their lives while boating could have survived if they had used a life jacket. Data indicates that about 80 percent of lives would be saved if everyone wore one. Because boat accidents occur without warning, there is often hardly any time or no time to put on a jacket once the emergency is occurs. Instead, everyone should have one on at all times.

Of course, no one should ever operate a boat after consuming alcohol. Not only is it illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but it also increases the risk of injury to everyone on the water. These laws even apply to small boats like kayaks.
