Boy Scouts Bankruptcy Leads to November Deadline for Filing Abuse Claims
USA- Usatoday.com writes that the Boy Scouts of America is filing bankruptcy, and with that move comes a hard deadline for victims of abuse in which to file claims. The Boy Scouts were plagued by allegations of abuse at the hands of Scout Leaders. While the organization had hoped for an 80-day long period in which survivors could file their claims, the date set by the court has allowed for six months since a judges order from earlier this year.*
The court also required the Boy Scouts to spend seven million dollars to spread awareness of the date. The campaign will include mailings, television advertisements, and print advertisements, all encouraging those who experienced abuse to come forward and file claims.
Those wishing to file a claim will have to complete a form which details information that the survivor recalls about the alleged abuse. Dates and locations of the abuse should be reported by those filing such claims. Sexual abuse at the hands of Scout Leaders, assistants, volunteers, camp employees, and other members of the Scouts all qualify.
Victims of other forms of abuse, such as emotional abuse, physical abuse, hazing, or bullying, can also file claims against the organization but must use a different form.
Attorneys are urging anyone with a claim to file, regardless of how much time has passed since the abuse occurred.
Records indicate that there are 275 pending lawsuits, and another 1,400 possible claims to be filed. However, the number of abuse survivors is believed to be higher. The Boy Scouts filed for bankruptcy in early 2020 in response to the lowering numbers of participants as well as the lawsuits filed by many former Scouts. The bankruptcy will include a Victims Compensation Trust in order to help make the payments to victims even as the organization attempts to continue to operate.
