Pipeline Explodes Leading to Missing Persons in Corpus Christi, Texas
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX- A pipeline exploded in Corpus Christi this week. The incident took place when a dredging vessel collided with a natural pipeline at a port in Texas. The explosion injured six individuals and left four missing.*
The missing victims were on the dredging vessel at the time of the crash. When responders arrived at the scene, there were clouds of smoke and large flames, which later were going out after the supply line was turned off. The Coast Guard aided in response to the fire and transported two of the victims to the hospital. The fire department carried the other victims to the hospital. Smoke was heavy near the site, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was working on testing the air quality.
Pipeline accidents are disturbingly common. One report found that on average, a pipeline fire occurs every four days, explosions take place every eleven days, and someone is injured from these incidents once every five days. Pipeline accidents also lead to fatalities about once every 26 days. In addition to injuries and deaths caused by pipeline accidents, these events have caused $4 billion in damage over the course of a nine-year study. Also, disasters often lead to evacuations. The study reported 30,000 deportations.
Some of the main causes of pipeline accidents include failing equipment, corrosion, and operator errors. Interestingly, newer pipelines tend to have more problems than do older ones. The pipelines that are most at risk of being involved in an accident are those that are under ten years old. Critics of the industry argue that there is not enough regulation of pipelines in the United States.
